Looking back... Flag erection condemned

The erection of paramilitary flags in Larne was condemned in May 2000.

The flags were erected in the Circular Road, Bridge Street and Linn Road areas of the town.

Local residents and political representatives were angered by the flags. Several UVF flags appeared on lampposts around the bus station with others being erected in the Craigy Hill area. SDLP Cllr Danny O’Connor questioned the support those erecting the flags actually had from their communities, saying: “We need to ask ourselves why are these people doing what they are doing? People in this town have been murdered by these groups- is that what these people are supporting? Is this the true will of the community?”
