Winter league resumes

Ballycastle Golf Club Competition ReportTHE P.J. McIlroy and Son sponsored Winter League resumed at Ballycastle Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday after the previous weekend's competition was cancelled due to heavy snow.

The course was in remarkably good condition, considering the sheer volume of rain which fell in the area on Friday and once again the scoring in the weekend's competitions was exceptional.

David Getty, playing off fourteen, was an emphatic winner of the section two stableford competition on Saturday with a stunning score of 42 points over sixteen holes. David completed the course in three over par gross and had an incredible seven shot winning margin over Leonard McCormick in second place with Joe Tannahill taking the third prize with a total of 34 points.

In the section one competition, Martin Brogan, playing off ten, returned an impressive score of 39 points to finish in first place with George McVeigh in second with 38 points and Eamon Dornan in third place with 37 points.

On Sunday, Paul Surgenor won the section one competition with a score of 37 points and Rory McCormick was second with a score of 35 points.

In section two, Gerry McConville was the winner on 37 points with Maurice Henry in second place also with a score of 37 points.

There has been a dramatic shift in fortunes at the top of the Winter League team standings with two weeks to go with team H taking over the lead again after they picked up eleven points this week for an overall total of sixty-one. A combination of absences, injuries and some poor golf contributed to team E only collecting two points this week and they now trail the leaders by five points and must be wary of team K who top scored this week and are now only a handful of points behind them in third.

In the bottom section, team F are in the lead, four points ahead of team I and six points ahead of team G. In the battle to avoid the wooden spoon, team B had a disastrous weekend, only mustering a single point and they now sit in last place, some four points adrift of team C.

The overall individual competition remains very close with Sean Brogan and Chris Kelly tied at the top on 206 points with David Getty one back on 205 points and George McVeigh also in the mix on 202 points. Individuals begin dropping their weakest scores next week with the best six cards out of eight counting in this competition. There will be a prize for the overall individual winner plus prizes for the best individual in each of the twelve teams.

The Winter League dinner and presentation of prizes takes place on Saturday 20th March at 7.30pm. All prize winners are expected to attend, please put your name on the attendance list on the competition notice board as soon as possible to give the caterer an idea of numbers.
