POOL: McNulty's and Sperrin share the spoils

WITH the withdrawal of the Triangle/UUC team being confirmed at last Monday night's meeting, only two matches took place in Division One this week.

However, yet again, both matches were of a high quality with McNulty's A and Sperrin sharing the points while Forge A registered a crucial victory

over Sperrin A.

Forge B continue to set the pace in Division Two still maintaining their 100% record, however Tommy McDonald's Roost B had their chances in to spoil it. The performance of the night came from the Sperrin B as they inflicted a thumping 5-0 away victory over McNulty's B.

Ady Toner opened up for the visitors as he took out a great eight ball finish in the opener, before taking advantage of a few mistakes by Johnny White to put his team up.

Lee Caulfield and Aaron Moffatt levelled matters as they inflicted a rare defeat on the partnership of Willie Boreland and Marc Hutchinson. However, Boreland got his revenge over Moffatt in their singles encounter, taking advantage of some very sloppy play from Moffatt in both frames.

Hutchinson gave the visitors a two game advantage as he took advantage of a flat performance by Sperrin captain Raymond Stockman. Billy Moore was instrumental in dragging the Sperrin back into this match.

First of all, he teamed up with Johnny White to get the better of Davy Tosh and Damien Reid, including a super finish in the decider. Moore then met Tosh in singles action, the McNultys man taking out a great finish in the opener before Moore take the second.

Tosh looked on his way to winning but left himself a tough cut on the black. He made the pot but could only watch as the white also found it's way to a pocked to hand the game to Moore and level the match.

Lee Caulfield took the first against Adrian O Kane, but the experienced McNultys man knuckled down to take the next, even though Caulfield had a good chance in the decider.

It was down to Moore again, this time teaming up with Paul O Connor, and he made it three from three on the night as they beat Reid and Toner by the odd frame in three.

Forge A 5-3 Sperrin A

A nip and tuck affair in the Forge saw the home side pick up a welcome victory in a nailbiting deciding encounter.

Tommy Morrow started well as he took advantage of a couple of missed oppurtunies by Neville Smyth to put his team in front. Morrow then teamed up with Ryan Craig, they took out a great break and finish in the opener, before running out another good finish in the second when it looked like the Forge pairing of Allen Tosh and Scott Clarke were in control.

Lee Hull brung the Forge back into the match as he beat Ryan Craig in straight frames. However, the Ballymoney man will be disappointed that he did not take his chances in this one.

Willie Eakin produced a typically confident finish in his first, opponent Nigel Craig looked on his way to levelling matters but was very unlucky on his last colour with Eakin taking full advantage to levele the match.

Hull teamed up with Neville Smyth in the next to take on Nigel Craig and Lyam McDermott. This game went to the decider after two scrappy opening frames, but it was Hull who managed to drag himself and his partner over the line, despite some slack efforts from Smyth in the process.

Lyam McDermott showed some great composure as he was given too many chances by Allen Tosh, bringing the match level once again. Darren McColgan made his season debut and he was in top form against Noel McDermott, pulling out two pots on his last colour and the black, in the first, which were out of the top drawer. He then comfortably won the second to put Forge 4-3 ahead.

This pair met again, McColgan alongside Eakin, McDermott partnered by Chris Mulholland. The Forge pair looked to be in control in the first, however McColgan amazingly potted the black too early, he must have been feeling sorry for McDermott.

The generosity was short lived, however, as the Forge pair started to slow things up and engaged their opponents in a tactical battle which they controlled, taking the next two frames and victory for their team.

Division 2

McNultys B 0-5 Sperrin B

A cracking victory for Sperrin B and they will be looking to kick on from this. Steven Spence has been in great form so far and he continued that run with an excellent victory over Keith Hunter.

The result was similar in the first doubles match as Spence teamed with Peter McMullan to beat Hunter and Chris McColgan. McMullan has also been putting insome impressive performances in recent weeks and this continued as he gave McColgan few chances in their singles match, although his fluke on the black in the opener helped somewhat.

Steven Warwick returned to league action meeting Simon McIlreavy, the players shared the first two frames before McIlreavy backed up his words with actions, putting his team 4-0 in front.

The next doubles match saw captain Davy Logue choose to partner the quickfire Steven Warwick with the steady, but not so quick, Hubert Smyth. This strange decision backfired as they were beaten by McIlreavy and John Sweeney to tie up this convincing victory.

Roost B 2-5 Forge B

The visitors remain unbeaten but did not have things all their own way. Rodney Leighton got the home side off to a flyer as he registered an impressive victory over Steven McIlroy.

McIlroy, alongside Aaron McCorkell, turned the tables in the next doubles match to level the match. Daniel McAuley then showed that all his practice is making a difference as he beat the experienced John Cameron.

The match was level again as Eddie Mullan proved too strong for Aaron McCorkell. However, Mullan could not double up as he and Uel White found the pairing of John Huston and Dijon McCorkell too strong.

Andy Hutchinson showed nerves of steel yet again as he sealed the first point for his side with a win over Uel White. It was left to John Huston to seal the victory, as he beat Tommy McDonald in straight frames.

Railway Arms 7-1 Roost A

Another solid performance from the Railway men as they try to keep pace with the leaders. Wahib Ziani opened with a victory over Charlie Speight, sealing the point with a super black in the second.

Ziani doubled up as he won the next doubles match, alongside Scott McClelland. The Arms’ pairing took out two impressive finishes. McClelland took this form into his singles match as he had a great break and finish in the opener, however opponent Steven McMullan replied with a good finish of his own.

The Roost man then took advantage of a foul by his opponent in the decider to register his team’s first point. Captain Arthur McMullan produced a convincing performance, comfortably disposing of George Cameron, before teaming up with Ziani to face Stewart Mitchell and Speight.

Ziani and McMullan took out a good finish in the first, before they were handed victory in the second as the Roost pairing deposited the black too early. The victory was secured as Ronnie McMullan continued his good form with a comfortable victory over Pat Conway.

Chris Baxter put the gloss on the scoreline as won both his singles and doubles matches.
