Volunteer returns home to Larne

A Larne man returned home after spending time as a volunteer in Borneo in September 1991.

Leroy Heatley from Heatherdale in the town arrived home after spending time as a volunteer in the rainforests of Borneo.

As part of a team of volunteers on Operation Raleigh, he worked on a number of projects including the construction of a suspension bridge over the Bankit River.

He also helped to construct a footbridge in a tribal village, dived for sponges which will be used in cancer research and collected rubbish from the Niah Caves.

The team also helped to protect the nesting sites of endangered turtles.

Leroy was one of three volunteers who had travelled from Northern Ireland.
