Larne native sets up fund in Canada for the borough

A woman originally from Larne who had emigrated to Canada was setting up a trust fund in September 1991.

Carole Van Der Voort , nee Kitson, grew up on the Glenarm Road area of Larne, before emigrating to Ontario in Canada.

The East Antrim native had the idea to set up a fund which she hoped would be used to assist projects in her native borough.

Along with two other men originally from Ireland, Carole was setting up a chapter of the Ireland Fund of Canada.

“As Larne is my home town, my loyalties lie there. I hope to be able to assist local projects through this fund,” Carole revealed at the time.

Carole was in the early stages of organising the fund in September 1991, and planned to get in touch with local councillors in the Larne area to make them aware of the fund.

She wanted to explain her visions of the uses of the fund to the councillors, and believed it could be used to help enterprise, community and cultural development projects.

The Ireland Fund of Canada was formed to raise money through donations, and is used to help local communities.
