Do you remember when... Electronics factory was set to open in Monkstown

A new £7 million electronics factory was expected to open in Monkstown, according to a report in the Newtownabbey Times in November 1989.

The arrival of Circaprint Holdings, an English based company, was to lead to the creation of 70 new jobs.

The factory was to be located on an 80,000 sq ft STC site at Doagh Road with the manufacture of printed circuit boards expected to start the following year.

The new plant was to have the backing of the Industrial Development Board. Its timely arrival was expected to facilitate a supply of components to the STC factory which was already an existing customer.

IDB chief executive Tony Hopkins said: “This is further evidence that Northern Ireland can provide an excellent main or subsidiary location for some 18,000 companies which could move from the crowded south east of England.”

Circaprint executive chairman, Bernard Stroud, indicated that the company was encouraged to locate in Northern Ireland because of the quality and availability of workers. Circaprint had factories located in Kent, Devon, Hampshire and Goa, India.
