Residents and holiday-makers in Carnlough complained that the area was being wrecked by people dumping rubbish.

One man said at the time that the popular walk along the Cranny River was being spoiled by rubbish which included chairs, washing machines and bed springs.

People who had once holidayed in the area were being put off staying because of the eye-sore.

The authorities had asked residents to note the number plates of the cars who were doing the dumping, but no one was willing to pass details onto them.

Larne Council and other councils including Ballymena, Ballymoney and Moyle had employed a countryside officer who was in charge of monitoring the situation.

The same week, a councillor criticised the toilet facilities at Portmuck, and said that not enough was being done to attract people to the area.

He had complained to the Environmental Health Department over a year before, but claimed that nothing was being done. He also said that there were facilities for boat-owners, but nothing in place for holiday-makers.
