Boxer Dave ‘Boy’ McAuley defends title

One of Larne’s most famous sporting sons defended his world title in September 1990.

Dave ‘Boy’ McAuley retained his IBF World Flyweight boxing title in his third defence of the belt in a bout at the King’s Hall in Belfast.

McAuley experienced a tough fight against Rodolfo Bianco from Colombia, and had to pick himself up from the canvas no fewer than four times.

But the local man had done enough to gain a unanimous points decision and earn the victory.

The Colombian fighter’s corner team were angered at the result as they felt their man had won the bout.

This win put Dave Boy just one fight away from equalling the British record set by Jim Watt, which was four successful defences of a world crown.
