Billy Bingham calls up Hughes

Michael Hughes received his first call up to the Northern Ireland football team in October 1991.

The 20-year-old Manchester City player was named in Billy Bingham’s squad for the match against Austria at Windsor Park.

“It came as a bit of a shock, but a pleasant one. I’m thrilled to bits. Everything’s happened so quickly: I have only been in the City first team for a month,” Michael remarked at the time.

The former Carrick Rangers player was enjoying life in Division One, and said it was not as tough as he had expected.

“It looks really difficult when you’re watching from the stand. But once you’re out there, it’s not so bad. Playing with top players makes it easier,” he said.
