A walk down Memory Lane

Bobby McNeill, from Irish Street recalls the estate as a pleasant place to live and some of the matriarchs from Irish Street who helped raise the children in the estate...

I have lived in Irish Street for 51 years, and it was in the 1950’s when the family moved in here. I think we were very nearly one of the first families to move in here when the houses were built.

My memory is that it was always a pleasant place to live in.

I remember a Mrs Keys who used to live here. She was a very, very kind woman and she would have been friendly. I remember her as a good neighbour and I remember my wife would always have been in her house, she would have been a very good friend to my wife.

I remember her bringing dinners down when people were sick, and when a new baby was born she would have visited and made sure we were alright.

There were quite a few women like that in Irish Street, kind women. I remember Mrs Heaney. She was a very good neighbour too; a very good and gentle woman. The nicest thing God ever made was a woman.

I know others, but not as clearly, but they were all excellent neighbours, the sort of people you could call on day or night, any time you were in a crisis. They were very reliable, honest women and people in Irish Street.
