Nigel Todd reaches play-offs quarter-final

ALL Saints player Nigel Todd qualified from the Larne zone for the Stonebridge National singles play-offs in Ballybrakes as did his club-mate Andy Thom.

Thom put in a good performance but one end proved decisive as he narrowly lost out to the reigning champion in his first game.

Todd came through his opening match against P McKenna despite losing a count of four in the middle of the game. The 20-year-old put this setback out of his mind and concentrated on his drawing game to take the lead and then play solid bowls in the final end to secure victory.

In his second game Nigel raced into an 8-0 advantage but again had to dig deep and respond positively when his opponent hit back to 8-5 putting the young man under pressure. Going into the final end Nigel had a three shot advantage but had to produce a good drawing bowl with his third delivery to secure victory.

After a three and a half hour wait, Nigel commenced his third game losing the first end. He steadied himself and immediately hit back with a three to take the lead. It was a close fought game however Todd held his concentration to win by four shots and progress into the last eight of the competition.

It had been a long day and the waiting around started to take it's toll as the young man lost concentration on a couple of ends of his quarter-final tie to lose two counts of four. Nigel battled the whole way but these two losing ends proved decisive as Nigel magnanimously bowed out having been outscored 11-8
