Nicholl aims for top four spot

CITY of Derry head coach Mark Nicholl is taking things slowly, as their season starts to come to a close.

The Judges Road men, who are in sparkling form having won their last three league games in AIL Division 2A to move to within a point of a top four spot, travel this weekend to face Highfield.

Despite sitting seven points clear of the Cork men, Nicholl isn’t taking anything for granted and is expecting a tough encounter at Woodleigh Park, despite the home side losing their last four AIL games in a row, in fact they suffered a heavy 41-10 defeat at Seapoint, on Saturday.

“I’m expecting a really, really tough challenge at Highfield, but we know that if we play well then we are capable of beating any side.

“I’m confident in the squad that I have that we can get the victory, we have a good big squad, with players now starting to get more and more comfortable playing in the first 15 and because of that I’m confident that we can come away with the right result.

“At this time of the year it’s all about performances and if we can play to our potential then the results will take care of themselves.”

As for Derry they had a bonus point victory over Banbridge winning 35-22 and their recent form is something which pleases Nicholl, but another bonus point success on their travels isn’t their first priority.

His side have five games remaining against teams who are below them in the league, but their remaining two home encounters against Bective Rangers and Midleton, is where Nicholl hopes they can stock up some points.

“Our results have improved over the last number of weeks, but you can always look at performances, however yes our results have put ourselves back into the running for a top four spot, which is pleasing.

“We are a point off fourth place but when we are playing away from home the only thing that matters is just to win the game, if we can get a bonus point also then so well and so good.

“First and foremost we just want to try and win our remaining games, but in our home matches we’ll be looking to try and rack up some points that will hopefully enable us to get some bonus point wins.”
