Newtowne aim for Irish Junior Cup success

THE big shock in last Saturday’s Matt Morrison North West Junior Cup was the defeat of Premier League leaders BBOB by First Division side City Colts.

Two other sides from the lower Divisions although defeated put up good performances they being Ardmore who lost narrowly to holders Newtowne and Caw who went down by two goals to Lincoln Courts.

Roe Rovers continued their good form defeating Portstewart Town while Tullyally scored seven against Dromore. Greysteel bowed out of the competition losing at Portstewart Olympic. Previous winner Liverpool Supporters Club won the Coleraine derby by emphatically defeating Coleraine Crusaders, in the remaining tie Magherafelt Reds got the better of Maghera Strollers.

Two games were played in the Premier Division where Sion got their first win of the season at Drummond and Burndennett defeated Foyle Wanderers, there were wins for Donemana and Claudy United over Park and Draperstown Reserves in Division One while in the Supplementary Cup Roe Rovers Reserves defeated Greysteel Reserves and Lincoln Courts Reserves lost to Dungiven III’s.

Newtowne carry the North West’s hopes in the Coca Cola Irish Junior Cup this Saturday while there is a full programme of league fixtures.

Irish Junior Cup

Woodvale v Newtowne

A massive game for both clubs as they look to take a step closer to winning this prestigious trophy. The home side were defeated at home in the Clarence cup last Saturday so they will be determined to turn things around.

The Limavady men were not at their best last week but still won, this is the one trophy that has eluded them and they would dearly love to change that, they look to good for their opponents.

Prediction: Newtowne.

Premier Division

Lincoln Courts v Greysteel

The Courts were not at their best in their win over Caw last week but they will quickly regain their form, although they are behind leaders BBOB they do have matches in hand, their opposition went out of the Junior Cup but they are still a dangerous side however they seem to do better at home.

Prediction: Lincoln Courts.

Drummond v Foyle Wanderers

The Roesiders were the first side that bottom club Sion have beaten this season not a statistic that they wanted, they are falling rapidly down the table, and they will be wary that their opponents this week have won only once this season, they don’t want another defeat.

Prediction: Drummond.

Burndennett v Sion

This all Tyrone derby sees the home side as strong favourites for the points, they sit in mid table but are to far behind the leaders to challenge for the title.

There would have been celebrations at Sion last week after their victory at Drummond it might be expecting to much to get a repeat result.

Prediction: Burndennett.

Maghera Strollers v Roe Rovers

The home sides season is disintegrating, knocked out of the Junior Cup last week they are now merely fulfilling fixtures so it will take all their managements skills to keep them motivated.

Rovers are vastly improved since the Christmas break they are playing some lovely football and their forwards can’t stop scoring, this will be a stern test for them but they couldn’t be in better form and may win.

Prediction: Roe Rovers.
