Museum tribute to sporting legends

Larne Borough Council is set to host the Ulster Sports Museum’s travelling exhibition when it officially opens at the leisure centre next Monday (January 9).

The exhibition will showcase both local sporting talent and memorabilia donated by personalities. It is designed to celebrate and highlight the sporting achievements of Ulster sportsmen and women, past and present.

Among those featured are football legend George Best, rugby great Jack Kyle on the rugby field, gold medal Olympian Mary Peters and the Sam Maguire-winning Ulster teams.

Golfers Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy‘s recent success are celebrated, as well as the gold and silver medal-winning amateur boxers at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010 and cyclist Wendy Houvenaghel.

The exhibition has been touring council facilities since 2009 and will remain in Larne till February 13.

The exhibition will be officially opened on Monday by the Mayor, Cllr Bobby McKee, and former Ireland rugby international Nigel Carr, who will be representing the Ulster Sports Museum.

Entrance to the exhibition is free.
