Local athletes Mark McManus and Adele Neill were this week selected to represent Ireland at the European Duathlon Championships in Holland this April.

The event will see top class athletes from across Europe complete a 15k run, a 60k cycle, before finishing with another 7.5k run.

Both Mark and Adele have excelled in their respective categories over the last 12 months.

Mark, a former international mountain runner, was also part of the prize-winning East Coast AC team at the Browns Bay ‘Beast’ Triathlon. He also produced a top-class performance at the Naas Duathlon, which was the qualifying race for the European Championships, where he claimed fourth as an international competitor.

During a race at the same championships he will also guide a visually impaired athlete, who is gearing towards selection for the Rio Olympics in 2016 .

The ECAC Head Coach described the opportunity to race and guide in Holland as “a very proud moment, something that I am excited, if not a little nervous by.”

Adele has also proved herself as a worthy competitor on the national, European and world stage. In 2013, she managed to secure a second-place finish at the Irish National Duathlon Championships and 37th at the World Triathlon Championships grand final.

“I’m very excited about this year’s racing season. The European Duathlon Championships will be my first big race of a busy 2014. I have already been selected for ITU Duathlon Championships in Spain in June,” she said.
