Magic Madden receives top awards at prize night

LOCAL cycling legend John Madden received a number of medals, cups and prizes at the Awards Night for Ulster members at the Massereene Golf Club in Antrim on Friday 22 January.

Prizes were presented to the winners of the Northern Ireland and Ulster Championships of 2009. In addition the Martin Birney Trophies for the Ulster 10 mile Championships will also be presented.

John received a total of five gold medals for winning: 10 Mile Time Trial (TT)- Veterans, 25 Mile TT – Veterans, 50 Mile TT Championship, 50 TT Vets Championship, Ulster Veterans Road Race Team Championships. He also was awarded a silver medal for the 10 Mile TT Overall and a bronze for placing 3rd in the Ulster 10 Mile TT – Overall.

He picked up two trophies for the 50 mile Championship and also the Veteran 10 mile Championship. A bike frame from Dave Kane cycles in recognition for winning the Dave Kane time trial league and a cash prize from Paul Slane cycles completed John’s awards for the evening.

John said: “I have been very fortunate to have had an incredible season in 2009 and it was wonderful to collect so many prizes and awards. It will be difficult to reproduce the type of form which gained me such success last year but I have been training really hard and hope to continue to be competitive in 2010.”

John has signed for Curran Racing team once again this year but has also taken an associate membership with local Coleraine based cycling club Bann Wheelers. He is the Principal of Roddensvale Special School in Larne and lives in Ballycastle.

John hopes to continue to race for more records, trophies and prizes in the season ahead.
