James motors to Edwin May victory at Raceview

THE Edwin May-sponsored competition at Ballymena Golf Club resulted in a comprehensive win for 14-handicapper James Allan who posted 43 points – three better than the next four prizewinners.

Not only had he a clear winning margin, he also scored his total from 17 holes after taking no points from a triple bogey at the par four 15th.

He got off to a flier on the front nine which he covered in level par, after three pars, three bogeys, plus birdies on the third, fourth and seventh, which equated to 25 points.

The second nine resulted in five pars, two bogeys, a double bogey on the 12th, plus that triple bogey on 15 which added 18 points to his front nine total.

Second prize went to Paul McAtamney (25) who had the best second nine score from Colm Cunningham, John Jamieson and Dominic McAleer, who all had 40 points.

McAtamney made a poor start with a non-score at the opening hole, followed by a bogey and double bogeys on the third, fifth and sixth but a birdie on the seventh was worth four points.

Two more bogeys left him with 18 points at the turn but the second nine was much better as it yielded 22 points.

This nine was made up of two pars, five single bogeys plus double bogeys at 11 and 17 and it was one point better than Cunningham.

Sixteen-handicapper Colm had 19 points on the way out which came from four pars, three bogeys plus double bogeys on the fifth and ninth.

The inward nine was steadier with six bogeys, two pars and a priceless birdie at the last hole which was worth four of his 21 points on the second nine.

John Jamieson, off a six handicap, also scored 40 points, 21 of them on the front nine from seven pars, a dropped shot on the eighth and a birdie at the opening hole.

The back nine was made up of seven pars plus dropped shots on the 12th and 18th but his back nine of 19 points was who better than fifth-placed Dominic McAleer (13).

Having bogeyed the opening two holes, he then parred five of the next seven holes – along with a birdie on the seventh and a bogey on the eighth – for a total of 23 points.

The second nine didn’t quite match that standard as he could only muster 17 points, despite parring the 10th and 11th, with his only other par coming on the final hole.

The final nett prize was won by G McCann (18) with a total of 39 points, of which 22 came from the second nine.

A mediocre front nine produced only 17 points the result of two pars, four double bogeys and a trio of single bogeys.

The second nine again started poorly as he dropped four shots on the first three holes but the last six holes were a totally different story as he notched three pars, two bogeys and a very welcome birdie on the par four 13th.

The best gross prize resulted in a return to the podium for Michael McGarry, with the three-handicapper playing the course in 70 shots.

The first nine saw him four over, having dropped shots on the second, fourth, fifth and eighth, but he managed to retrieve two of those dropped shots from the second nine, having had birdies at the 10th, 15th and 18th, with the only dropped shot being on the par three 14th.
