Hughes makes Irish debut

COOKSTOWN Hockey club goalkeeper Ian Hughes made his senior Ireland debut last weekend in a Celtic Cup game against Wales at Lisnagarvey.

The hosts only needed a draw to secure the trophy and Hughes played a major part in the title winning performance with several impressive saves.

Hughes has been a regular member of the Ireland panel this season but due to the impressive form of regular net-minder, David Harte, Hughes has been unable to seal his place in the Irish goal.

The Cookstown man now joins a unique band of sporting brothers who have represented their country at different sports. Ian’s brother Aaron is a former Northern Ireland captain and currently owns 80 caps for Northern Ireland.

The game was the last competitive fixture under South African coach Paul Revington and the Celtic Cup success ensured his reign ended on a high.
