Horseshoe competition in Armoy this Saturday

A horseshoe competition has been organised for Armoy this Saturday – an event that will stir memories for many of the locals who use to see it played on a regular basis in the village.

A number of former exponents of the sport have come out of retirement to take part and they are hoping that enthusiasts from neighbouring villages and beyond will respond to the challenge. Those include Dervock’s Willie Culbertson, Mosside’s ‘Dopher’ Simpson as well as other ‘throwers’ from Stranocum, Limavady and Coleraine who will have their work cut out coping with the talents of ‘Hudie’ McNeill, John McCook to name but a few.

The competition is expected to start around 12noon at the recreation park in the village with a £3 entry fee being asked. The winner will receive a cup and a cash prize and the runner up will also be rewarded. Games are best of three. Horseshoe throwing forms an integral part of the culture of rural areas and the skill involved has been introduced to a new generation. It is hoped that Saturday’s event will be one of many in Armoy in the future.
