Gurney beaten by 'Wolfie' again

WATERSIDE'S Daryl Gurney suffered a torrid time tonight when he faced world number three Martin Adams, in the BDO World Darts Championship, at the Lakeside.

Last year at the same second round stage 'Wolfie' defeated Gurney 4-2, but after producing a tremendous display on Monday evening to see off 14th seed Scott Mitchell, the Waterside man should have gone into this evening's encounter full of confidence.

"I think this year I'm throwing a lot better, I'm more confident on the stage, last year I was very nervous and I was missing a lot of singles and treble 19's, but I have worked on my game for the last month and half on a few fine details, so I'm looking forward to it," he said before the revenge clash against Wolfie.

However Gurney was strangely subdued and was easily beaten by four sets to one. He never really threatened to derail Adams' challenge and when presented with a coupe of chances to win vital games, failed to hit the double.

After the match, Adams said he felt that Gurney had suffered some bad luck at the start of the game, and was then trying too hard to get back into it.

Another man from Londonderry looking to reach the quarter-final stage on Wednesday evening was Martin McCloskey; he shocked 11th seed Steve West when he too had a 3-2 victory on Monday night.

Unfortunately the Carnhill man, who is now living in Letterkenny also lost 4-1 to Garry Thompson, the man who Gurney defeated in the first round at last year's competition at Frimley Green.
