Juvenile golf on a high at Cairndhu GC

Juvenile Golf at is on a high at Cairndhu after the club’s young players captured the prestigious Fred Daly Championship.

Ronnie Ferguson’s team defeated Lurgan Golf Club by four matches to three, but that’s all that was required. Marc McKinstry sunk the winning putt in match four on the 16th to take the title. Victories for Stephen Watts, Neil McKinstry and Ryan Long assured the title was heading back to Cairndhu.

Club captain Moorland Holmes was delighted with the Cairndhu’s first Fred Daly win in over 20 years.

The squad would like to thank team manager Ronnie Ferguson and coach Stephen Hood for their help and guidance. They will be determined to defend their title next year, but first, must travel to represent Ulster in the All-Ireland Fred Daly finals.

For the record, the Cairndhu team for the finals was: Stephen Watts Jnr. (captain), Neil McKinstry, Ryan Long, Marc McKinstry, Peter Clark, Mark Petticrew, Fiontann Callen and Mathew Devine.

Following on from the success of the Fred Daly, the club’s 12+ handicappers headed to Clandeboye to take their chance in the annual Ava Shield competition in which 12 teams took part.

Cairndhu made it all the way to the final where they overwhelmed Holywood by 4.5 to 0.5 to add another trophy to the Cairndhu cabinet. The club’s team was made up of Adam Crum, Jonathan Anderson, Jack Finlay, Ciaran Robinson and Chris McCourt.

Almost all of Cairndhu’s juveniles contested for prizes during Moorland Holmes’ Captain’s Day. The top prize went to Jack Finlay with a superb 43 points.

At Stephen Watts’s Juvenile Captain’s Day, Scott Molloy emerged as the winner from the 40-strong field with 43 points.

Meanwhile, Tosko Bletsov’s 43 points was enough to win club president Dale Lough’s top prize, pipping Matthew Herron, who finished as runner-up. Dale has been a great supporter of juvenile golf and the junior section would like to thank him, and his wife Sally, for all their support over the last three years,in particular.
