Glen wins a play-off to win the B&D for Dunmurry again

The locals won the trophy on the first tie hole, after the final finished 7-7.

The hero on the night was Glen McAuley who held his nerve to secure the win after both sides had won their home legs 4-3.

On the tie hole, Glen hit the perfect drive down the first, while the Shandon player had pulled his drive left leaving a difficult approach to green. The Shandon man did well to hit the green but the ball ran over the back and he chipped up to about four feet.

Glen hit the green with his second and rolled his putt to the edge of the hole and it was conceded. Unfortunately for the young Shandon Park man, his putt rolled past and Dunmurry regained the trophy for the fifth time since 2008.

Earlier in the night, Dunmurry, trailing 4-3 from the first leg, got the evening off to a great start when Dunmurry’s first four players all won their games in convincing style. Darren Crowe was a four and three winner over Stuart Blakely, followed quickly by Paddy McGlone, Graeme Dickson and Stephen Crowe all winning on the 16th.

Shandon hit back by winning the next three to set up the dramatic final hole play-off.

In the away leg, things looked bad for Dunmurry as Darren Crowe was the only winner after the first five games and the final two games on the course were all square.

However, Stephen Crowe and Peter Kerr won their games on the 18th to give Dunmurry what proved to be vital wins in the overall result.

Peter missed the second leg as he was in Prague representing Ireland at the Under 16 European Championships.

Team Captain Tony Cassidy, speaking at the presentation, said: “The boys have been magnificent throughout the year starting back in April right through to the final.”

He thanked all the players who had played a part in the tournament and also paid tribute to the caddies and the many spectators who had followed the team all year.

The players used throughout the Belfast and District Cup campaign are Chris Black, Darren Crowe, Stephen Crowe, Graeme Dickson, Michael Dickson, Ward Farrell, Peter Kerr, Ian Moore, Glen Mcauley, Chris Morgan, Stevie McCollam and Paddy McGlone.
