Garvey girls heading through after a single shot victory in Wingrave Cup

On Wednesday 23 July, Lisnagarvey ladies edged out Whitehead in a thrilling single ball victory in the second round of the Wingrave Cup.

Skip Kay McCully’s team of Vera McCourt, Sheillagh Stephenson and Hilary Jess got off to a good start, being up 10 shots at end five. They didn’t look back from then on and finished up winning 16 shots to 10 against Rosemary Shaw.

Denise Smith and her team of Margaret Snodden, Greta Jeffers and Mae Gibson found the going tough and went down nine shots to 22 to S McMurty.

Only three rinks play in the Wingrave Cup so the third rink consisted of Moya McLean, Joyce Lyness, Betty Campbell and Marilyn Kerr.

This was to be the deciding rink and, at the beginning, it looked sketchy for Garvey as their girls found the green difficult to begin with.

However, they soon came to terms with the green as the game progressed and they beat Marion McHugh’s rink 19 shots to 11.

That was enough to see out Lisnagarvey’s one ball win and put them through to the semi final on 20 August. They will be at home to Dungannon for that semi-final.

The next night, Lisnagarvey travelled to Donaghadee for a league match. It was lovely to play bowls on a warm sunny day although the result did not go Lisnagarvey’s way as they lost 5-2.

Kay McCully’s rink won by 22 shots to 17. Moya McLean’s rink were beaten 21- 8 by the experienced Jean Hollinger. Iris Scott’s rink won 15-12 while Caroline Key’s rink were beaten 20-14.

This was a disappointing result for Lisnagarvey who now have no games until 7 August as there are other bowls competitions taking place.
