Larne played the first of their pre-season friendlies on Saturday, but it was a losing start as they went down 1-0 to Shankill United at Inver Park.
The visitors could have been two up in the first two minutes as the Larne defence took time to settle. A slip by Robbie White let in William Cushley who fired wide when he should have done a lot better then Gary Anderson wasted a chance following indecision among the home defence.
Both sides were full of endeavour and Gary Workman tested the United keeper with a dipping volley before McClean was upended in the box but the referee ignored the penalty claims.
Shankill scored what proved to be the winner on the stroke of half-time. Jason Perry crossed from the left to find Anderson who forced the ball over the line from close range.
After the break Shankill made nine changes while Larne, who threw on six new faces, looked the more likely to score.
Mark Picking forced a great save from Mark Winston, then Keelan McAuley had two opportunities to open his account. The first was a miss-kick three yards out and his second, a header, produced a great save from Winston.
On Saturday Larne are again at Inver Park for their second friendly when Brantwood are the visitors (3pm kick-off).
