Gormley at the double

A second half brace from Trojans’ Conor Gormley ensured they over came a battling Newbuildings side, to claim the Under 15 Cup.

In truth the Derry side’s youngsters were just that little more composed on the ball and but for some heroic goalkeeping by Matthew McClelland the final could have been over at half-time.

Trojans went close to taking the lead on 15 minutes but Joe McColgan’s header, which had Newbuildings keeper McClelland beaten, hit the post.

A fantastic ball out of defence by Jack Taylor released Toland, but the front man who the week before grabbed a hat-trick in the league encounter between the two sides, fired wide.

Three minutes later on 23 minutes Toland broke clear of the Newbuildings defence again, but McClelland stood up well and from a tight angle the striker shot wide.

Soon after Doherty would have broken the deadlock but for a super stop by McClelland.

The talented left-back saw his side footed effort instinctively parried away by the Newbuildings net-minder.

Early in the second half Toland got away again and not for the first time young McClelland produced another outstanding stop.

Trojans did take the lead on 48 minutes when Doherty’s ball into the box found Gormley and he calmly lifted the ball over an out-rushing Hill.

Just after the hour mark McClelland made another sublime save this time at full stretch he turned Caolan Cooley’s thunderous effort over the bar.

The Waterside teenagers always looked a threat on the counter-attack and they went close when William Shields’ cross-cum-shot nearly caught out Adam Stars, but the Trojans keeper saved.

Aodhan Fagan went close twice in the closing stages, but Hill saved his first effort and his second attempt was blocked.

Then right at the death another Doherty clearance cut out the Newbuildings defence and the alert Gormley raced clear and again lobbed McClelland.
