Back-to-back derbies for Ballynure sides

Players and officials of Ballynure Old Boys were disappointed when the Crawford Cup quarter-final against FC Ballynure was postponed owing to the pitch at Parkview Hockey Club being declared unplayable.

This cup tie will take precedence over any scheduled league fixture, and will be staged this weekend in Doagh, and the teams will clash again the following weekend, this time in Mossley in the McReynolds League Cup.

“With back-to-back local derbies against FC Ballynure, the players will be fed up clashing with each other,” said OB manager Gary Burns.

“They beat us in a league fixture earlier in the season, so we owe them one. We are now going great guns, being unbeaten since November, so we fancy our chances of making it a league and cup double over the next fortnight,” he stated confidently.

Taking the opportunity to reflect on the season he continued, “Erratic form in the earlier part of the season means that we will not win the league title, but we are still involved in the McReynolds Cup, the Crawford Cup and the O’Gorman Cup, so we have a great chance of landing some silverware.

“There has been a seven years’ trophy drought at the club; in fact the last time we won a trophy I was playing centre half, so the players are determined not to let slip the opportunity to pick up medals this time.

“The signing of striker Ricky Higgins from Ballyclare Comrades in January has given us a boost, and if he and my brother Ronnie continue to knock in the goals, we will have our most successful season for years,” he declared.
