Eoghan Rua celebrate season of success

Eoghan Rua GAC Coleraine looked back on another season of success and presented their annual ‘player of the year’ awards at the Royal Court on Saturday night.

Guest speaker Brian Smith, vice-chairman of the Derry county Board, congratulated the club on the season’s efforts.

He commended the club’s discipline throughout the year as a good example for others to follow. He also referred to the number of players the club provided to the various county teams across all codes and age groups from adult to youth teams.

The vice-chairman was on hand to present trophies to all the individual player of the year award winners which were: Young camog (Annie McMullan Memorial Cup) – Shauna Doherty; Young hurler – Thomas Magee; Young footballer – Paddy Mullan; Reserve camog – Orlagh Brolly; Reserve footballer – Eamon Conneely; Senior hurler – Anton Rafferty; Senior camog – Megan Kerr; Senior footballer – Colm McGoldrick.

The ‘clubperson of the year’ award for the Charlie Hampson Memorial Cup was presented to Billy Shiels and Trevor Loughrey for their unstinting efforts with the Under-14 hurlers by Mairead Christie. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of medals to the all-conquering senior camogie panel who retained their Derry senior championship crown before narrowly losing out on a second Ulster title.

The medals and cup were presented to the panel by Maura McCloy, chair of the Derry county camogie board. Presentations were also made to the management team of the senior camogs in recognition of their huge efforts in leading the team to back-to-back Derry titles.

The club chairman Brendan McLernon congratulated all the award winners as he thanked everyone involved in making the season just past such an exciting and enjoyable year of sporting entertainment. The chairman said that while winning trophies may be a tangible sign of success the fact that the club had some 22 teams across four codes of gaelic football, hurling, camogie and ladies football from primary school age through to adult level competing in games throughout the year was the real success story.

He thanked everyone for their support and looked forward to next season with hope and expectation of the club continuing along the path of progress across all fronts both on and off the field of play. He also reminded all present that club’s Annual General Meeting will be held in the clubrooms at Pairc Eoghain Rua on Sunday 7th December at 3.00pm.
