DERRY GAA: Barton named new Derry manager

Damian Barton is the new Derry Senior Football manager following a meeting of the County Committee on Tuesday night.

The highly respected 1993 All Ireland winner was confirmed on a two year term and will take on the role with immediate effect, bringing a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the position, as well as an in-depth knowledge of Derry football.

The new manager’s backroom team will be publicly confirmed in due course but the Newbridge club man said he was delighted to be selected to lead his native county.

“I’m honoured to accept the responsibility that goes with this role,” explained Barton, “I regard it as a privilege and a challenge which I am very much looking forward to.”

A spokesmen for the County Board said, “On behalf of all members, supporters and patrons of Derry GAA, we warmly welcome Damian and wish him every success in his future endeavours.”

Tonight’s meeting also saw the following positions ratified for the incoming season (all unchanged):

Senior Hurling and U21 Manager: Tom McLean

Minor Hurling Manager: Stephen O’Kane

Minor Football Manager: Damian McErlain

A further announcement regarding the position of U21 football manager will be made at a later date.
