Craigavon are the NI champions

THE under 16 girls volleyball team from Craigavon Senior High School has been crowned Northern Ireland champions.

This is the first time in the school’s history that the girls have won this competition and they did it in some style by not dropping a single set in their league campaign.

In the group stages of the league they beat Drumglass High School, Markethill High School, Lismore and Portadown College all by two sets to nil.

In the finals day play offs the team was outstanding, beating Dalriada of Ballymoney 25-18 and 25-23.

Judith Edgar, the team captain, injured her ankle in this game and was a doubt for the final. Thankfully she recovered enough to lead her team out against Coleraine High School and was able to control the game from start to finish, which helped the girls to a 25-12, 25-7 win.

Shannon Lyness’s pinpoint setting allowed Judith to hit points easily while Courtney Adamson and Cathy Rees made some timely tips.

Rebekah McCrory’s back court passing was excellent while Danielle Dickson’s serve caused problems for the opposition all day. It was a great team performance. The girls now look forward to competing in the All-Ireland play offs.
