Beth lifts Gold in England

There was Gold for Alpha’s Beth Stephenson, the young Wallace High School pupil, when she got the better of her Alpha team mate Rebecca Woods in the Girls Singles at the Leigh Indoor Sports Centre at the weekend.

Despite early defeat in the Girls Doubles, Beth went on to dominate Group C of the Girls Singles, brushing aside Alicia Adams (Cheshire) 21-8 21-10, Sophie Taylor (Cheshire) 21-3 21-6 and Amy Hayhoe (Norfolk) 21-5 21-7 before booking a place in the semi-final proper with a 21-19 21-12 win over Annie Lado (Hampshre).

There was never any chance of Beth allowing the Devon schoolgirl Bronya Pike preventing a final against her club colleague at Alpha, Rebecca Woods from taking place as Beth took just 26 minutes to knock out the No2 seed 21-12 21-17.

Meanwhile Rebecca, seeded No1, had a much tighter passage through to the final and after seeing off Northumberland’s Emily Harrison 21-16 21-17 and Megan Channon 21-18 11-21 22-20 she had a tough three-setter against Emily Killoran (Devon) before reaching the final 21-14 13-21 21-16.

The final was typically a close affair but it was Beth who was to come out on top on this occasion winning 21-16 21-11.

In the Girls Doubles Rachael and Rebecca Woods were to lose 21-9 21-9 to Molly Chapman and Grace King and after losing the opening set to Bronya Pike and Elysia Taylor, the Alpha pair came back to level 21-17 and were within a few points of snatching victory but failed to take advantage, losing 21-18 in the decider with Chapman and King taking the title.
