Star to show Odyssey his X appeal

LARNE lad Phillip Magee will be joining other finalists from the hit TV talent show X-Factor when they take part in a special fundraising night at the Odyssey in Belfast next month.

The X Factor night is in aid of the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children (NICFC). The evening will include performances from various X-Factor finalists of the last two years. Headline act Journey South, the winners of the 2005 series, will be performing alongside Phillip and 2006 finalists Ashley McKenzie and Dionne Mitchell.

Phillip, 23, says he has had a busy year playing gigs and working with Irish television station TG4. Last year Phillip appeared in a TG4 show in which he attempted to learn Irish. His next appearance on the channel will be in Glor Tire, a country music themed show which goes live on air next month.

The Larne lad, who dropped out of an undergraduate degree course at Queen’s University for a chance at fame, said: “I’ve performed with Journey South before and I’m friendly with them. I’ve been doing a lot of gigs in England. I am getting my own group together and trying to speak to a music promoter who worked with Johnny Cash.”

A fan of the late Cash - the Man in Black - Phillip says he would like to take a new group in a country rock direction. You can catch Phillip in action on TG4 on Wednesdays at 10.30pm, available on satellite television in Northern Ireland, from next month.

Journey South’s second album is due out this month and the duo - brothers Carl and Andy Pemberton - will be performing an exclusive set for the Belfast audience. The pair will also meet fans, take part in a charity raffle and sign albums.

Tickets are available from Shek, Exchange Road, Larne and are priced at 27.50. For bookings you can contact the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children on 028 9080 5599. The event is scheduled for 7 Live, Odyssey Pavilion, Belfast, on Friday, November 9. Doors open at 7.00pm.
