Society members share stories of the Great War

The Newtownabbey Branch of the North of Ireland Family History Society had a full house, including some new faces, at their meeting on Monday, November 10.

Six members spoke about different aspects of WW1 and their associated family history research.

The place names mentioned took the audience from the local area to far away places such as India, Canada, Gallipoli and Mesopotamia amongst others.

After the talks, the Last Post was played by Jenny Stewart from Ballyduff Silver Band as part of the national Last Post project.

Members also had a chance to check out some WW1 memorabilia and share research tips.

The Great War event followed on from a successful meeting in September when the branch launched a CD of gravestone transcriptions from the Corner Graveyard at Carnmoney Parish Church, including war graves information. At that meeting, members had discussed the best ways to search for records about the men whose names appear on the headstones.

The Society’s December meeting will be a social evening. Future meetings will include looking at school records, a talk by an experienced researcher, George Busby, as well as a genealogy question and answer night.

Meetings take place on the second Monday of each month at 7pm in Glengormley High School.
