Silverware for the Lisnagelvin Badgers

MEMBERS of the St John Ambulance Brigade young and old have been celebrating this week after three junior members enjoyed unprecedented success in a competition in England.

Three young members of the St John Badgers from Lisnagelvin Badger Sett travelled to Swindon last weekend, along with their leaders and supporters, to representing Northern Ireland in the ‘National Badger Competition’s.

To qualify for the English competition the Badgers had to win the Northern Ireland first aid finals, which were held in Belfast back in March earlier this year.

The three Badgers, Ryan Johnston, Ben Bradley Knox and Katherine Morgan, completed two sections in the UK event. The first was in the Eco Badger category, and the second category was a First Aid Badger task.

Officer Linda Heaney, who has been proudly watching the Badgers’ progress, said: “In Eco they had six minutes to complete a variety of eco related tasks, while in the first aid section they were presented with a scenario in which they had to deal with a child who had come off his skateboard, cutting his arm and leg and fracturing his wrist. This scenario also had to be completed in six minutes.”

The skilled-up trio got top marks overall, tying with Wyeside Badgers, an English Sett, and after all the ‘i’s’ were dotted and ‘t’s’ were crossed, the they received the trophy for second place - the highest achievement a Northern Ireland Badger Sett has ever received.
