SDLP man set to be Mayor

LISBURN looks set to get only its second SDLP Mayor when the new council meets for the first time this week.

Current deputy Mayor, Cllr Brian Heading, is the favourite to become the city’s new First Citizen at the AGM.

The DUP increased its representation in last week’s election and now holds 14 of the 30 seats. It is believed they will support the election of Mr Heading.

Mr Heading, 54, was co-opted onto the Council in 2004. He was Chair of the Council’s Leisure Services Committee from 2007-2009 before becoming deputy Mayor last year.

It’s thought DUP group leader William Leathem will be the new deputy.

Mr Leathem was elected to the council in 2005 and was Chairman of the Planning Committee from 2006-2008. Away from the Council he is well known in piping circles as a founder member and chairman of Magheragall Pipe Band where he plays the pipes.
