Schools’ mural an “outstanding success”, says Mills

AN Olympic themed mural handcrafted by more than 350 post primary pupils from throughout Ballymena has ‘publicised the good name and reputation of the borough on the world stage’ within just a few months and with a budget of £24,500.

That was the view expressed to the monthly meeting of Ballymena Borough Council by Cllr Maurice Mills on the Hands Around the World Creative Peace Mural Project.

Created in March this year, it is the most recent addition to ‘Arts in Parliaments’ first exhibition in the historic Westminster Hall.

It went on display on June 14 and Cllr Mills along with Cllr Audrey Wales were there to see it go up.

Both told their colleagues last Monday night that it was a memorable occasion.

“At the public launch in the Great Hall of Westminster we were addressed amongst others by the speakers of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. That in itself gave depth and dimension to the proceedings.

“For the next few weeks, Ballymena, therefore, will be part of an international showpiece which is guaranteed to attract thousands of viewers inspired by the Summer Olympic Games which gave initial vent to the project”.
