Royal Navy ‘exemplary’ service honour for Carrickfergus man

WO Glen Humphreys was recognised for his 34-year career with his citation stating that he has provided “good, faithful, valuable and meritorious service throughout”.

Honoured at receiving the award, the 51-year-old, added: “I have always taken pride in my work which is what I was brought up to do and I have also tried to offer good, faithful and valuable service throughout my career.”

Glen, a father of three and stepfather to a further three, attended Hopefield High School in Newtownabbey before joining the Royal Navy in 1981.

A long and varied career has taken him around the world and he now works at Her Majesty’s Naval Base in Portsmouth during the week.

“My best role was working in HMS Gloucester from 1997 to 1999 when I was appointed to Chief Petty Officer in charge of my own section for a deployment to the Mediterranean down to New Zealand and then into a major maintenance period, It was a busy, but fulfilling time,” he said.

Meritorious Service Medals were awarded onboard HMS Victory and presented by the Second Sea Lord Vice Admiral Jonathan Woodcock OBE.

He said: “The Meritorious Service Medal is only awarded to those who have given the most extraordinary service.

“It was a very great privilege to present these awards to an exceptional group of men and women and to be able to thank them and their family and friends for their dedication and commitment to the Naval Service.”
