Royal Mail deliver massive Christmas mailbag in Coleraine

POSTMEN and women in Coleraine pulled out all the stops to deliver a huge mailbag of hundreds of thousands of items in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

The round-the-clock operation was part of a great Northern Ireland effort that saw Royal Mail handle a mailbag of approximately 50 million items over the festive period, in the face of very difficult weather conditions.

Michael Kennedy, Regional Operations Director for Royal Mail in Northern Ireland, said: “Customers depend on us, especially at Christmas when the average mailbag rises from around 2.0 million a day to over 3.0 million, and our postmen and women worked incredibly hard despite the very difficult snow and icy conditions to ensure that everything posted before the last recommended posting dates arrived on time.

“Over the past few weeks our postmen and women have shown dedication and commitment in very difficult and potentially dangerous conditions. They have shown real consideration to their customers by getting mail delivered and many really did go the extra mile to make it through ice and snow to their customers’ front doors.”

As well as working to deliver letters, cards and packets posted by the latest recommended dates, employees across Northern Ireland put in extra efforts to make sure that many millions of items posted late also reached customers before Christmas.
