River search after 'person in trouble'

RESCUERS searched the River Bann between Coleraine and Toomebridge last Tuesday in freezing temperatures after reports that a person was in trouble on one of the bridges and may have gone into the water.

Sean McCarry is the regional commander of the Community Rescue Service.

He said a full search operation by the Bann River Rescue and other rescue organisations along the waterway swung into action after the police passed alerted them.

“A call came through to the to police that there was a person in trouble along one of the bridges on the Bann.

“That was at around two o’clock and we didn’t know which bridge, so we had to search all the bridges from Coleraine down to Toomebridge and we had the boat and ground teams out for three hours until we were fairly sure there was no one in trouble.”
