Review of NIHE housing stock

THE Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) has begun a review of its local housing stock in Londonderry.

NIHE has a statutory responsibility for carrying out regular House Condition Surveys.

This year’s survey commenced over the past few days. The survey examines the condition of homes in both the private and social sectors and their energy efficiency and the results are used are used to guide priorities for housing expenditure.

If your home has been selected then you will receive a letter in advance informing you of a visit from a trained professional surveyor.

If you have not received a letter or the surveyor is unable to provide identification then you should refuse entry.

The Housing Executive’s Head of Research, Joe Frey said: “This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Housing Executive and our first survey in 1974 painted a very bleak picture with one in five homes in Northern Ireland classified as unfit. The total housing stock stood at 455,510 dwellings, with over one third built pre 1920.

“The most recent survey in 2009 showed the considerable progress made; the rate of unfitness has fallen to 2.4 per cent. The dwelling stock in Northern Ireland has increased to 740,000 dwellings, with 14% of these built pre 1919.

“The House Condition Survey is an important piece of research and I would urge everyone who is contacted to take part to help us build as comprehensive a picture of Northern Ireland’s housing as possible.

“The survey will take approximately an hour to complete, depending on the size of the property. The survey is completely confidential and any information given will be treated as such. No individuals or households will be identified in the report.”

If you feel that you need further information then you can ring the House Condition Survey Helpline at the Housing Executive on 0800 072 4002 or Type Talk Number 18001 02890 240588. If you require a sign-language interpreter then this can also be arranged.
