Refuse collections are more important than gritting?

NORTH Antrim MLA Mervyn Storey has hit out at local householders who believe refuse collections are more important than keeping the footpaths safe.

The issue was raised during a recent Full Council meeting after members aired their views over who was responsible for removing the snow and ice from pavements and pathways.

Cllr Storey explained: “We are continually coming underfire because of the state of the footpaths, roads and the problem of uncollected refuse.

People have been approaching me saying their bin hasn’t been lifted. In response I ask them what is more important, council staff being used to collect bins or to keep the streets clean and safe? They say that their bins are more important.

“Common sense is not very common at the minute in society. I believe they are looking for someone to blame and hand on.

“Everyone is doing their best, including Roads Service. The community just has to work together and be a little more understanding, patient and responsible.”
