Pupils praised at Larne High School awards night

New Carrick Rangers boss Gary Haveron was the guest speaker at the recent Larne High School prize night.

Principal John Armstrong welcomed Gary – a former pupil at the school – to the event, along with pupils, parents, Governors and other guests.

Mr Armstrong told those present that the event was a celebration of pupils’ achievements “both academically and in other fields”.

He added: “As ever I wish to make the personal point that we do not judge young people’s success in terms of artificially contrived benchmarks. I have been quoted in my opposition to the current Government meddling with examinations and the seeming obliviousness to the human impact on young people’s futures.

“Our job is to assist them to fulfil their potential whatever their ability level and I take as much pleasure and pride in a pupil’s success, whether it be in the number of As or Ds and Es, if they have overcome learning difficulties or other challenges.”

The principal also paid tribute to others involved in the pupils’ success.

“I wish to thank all the staff, both teaching and non-teaching for their 
unstinting support and hard work throughout the year. I also wish to thank my Chairman and Governors who have once again been behind me all the way.

“Thanks as well to the parents; no-one could ask for better support,” Mr Armstrong concluded.
