PSNI want CCTV andwitnesses to funeral

Meanwhile, the PSNI have confirmed that they are looking for people to provide information on the masked gunmen who fired shots over Mrs O’Hara’s coffin in Templegrove and a subsequent paramilitary-style procession through the middle of Londonderry on the day of her funeral.

The Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Philip Montgomery issued a number of special appeal points, asking: “Were you in the area of Templegrove on 15th July 2015? Did you see anyone dressed in paramilitary-style uniform?

“Did you see any suspicious activity in and around the area of Templegrove on the evening of the 15th July 2015? Did you hear what may have been shots being fired that evening?

“Did you see, or know where the gunmen went after the incident? Were you along the route of the funeral cortege from Templegrove to the City Cemetery via Buncrana Road, Northland Road, Bishop Street and Lone Moor Road on 18th July 2015?

“Did you see anyone dressed in paramilitary-style uniform on 18th July 2015. Are you able to identify anyone who was dressed in paramilitary-style uniform on 18th July 2015?”

Detective Inspector Montgomery continued: “Do you have any information which may assist this investigation, if so please contact Detectives on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 8000 555 111.”

Police are also asking anyone with CCTV on their premises to provide it to them as an aid to their investigation.

Unionists in Londonderry expressed outrage after shots were fired outside the Templegrove wake house of Mrs O’Hara, the mother of Patsy O’Hara, an INLA member who died on hunger strike in the Maze in 1981.

Mrs O’Hara had stood unsuccessfully as an independent republican candidate in Foyle in the 2007 Assembly elections.

The PSNI has already carried out searches and seized a number of items after the incidents.

Londonderry MLA Gary Middleton was amongst a DUP delegation that blasted the PSNI’s policing of the funeral of Mrs O’Hara, branding the force ‘lax’ when dealing with republicans but ‘heavy-handed’ when dealing with loyalists.

Councillor David Ramsey compared the funeral to parades by Islamic State.
