Poppy flower bed request

The Carrick branch of the Royal British Legion is seeking to site a commemorative flower bed in the borough.

The branch wrote to Carrickfergus Borough Council with a request to turn one of the local authority’s flower beds into a ‘sea of poppies’.

In the letter, branch chairman Alan Hamilton said the site would mark both the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One and the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings, and would ‘commemorate those who gave their lives in both world wars.’

Councillor Charlie Johnston suggested that the flower bed be sited at a location within the town centre or close to the castle.

Meanwhile, Alderman May Beattie suggested a similar flower bed be made available in Whitehead.
