Sinn Fein councillor arrested in paramilitary swoop

A Sinn Fein councillor from East Londonderry was arrested by police this morning in an operation investigating paramilitary activity in the Dungiven area over the past four years.

Detectives from Serious Crime Branch investigating paramilitary activity around the Dungiven area have arrested four men aged 31, 53,58 and 62.

Sinn Fein Councillor Sean McGlinchey confirmed that among those arrested was a local Sinn Fein councillor.

In a statement, the PSNI said: “The suspects were detained at various properties this morning and a number of house searches are being carried out.”

Detective Chief Inspector Una Jennings, from Serious Crime Branch, said: “We are investigating various forms of paramilitary activity in the area, predominantly over the last four years. These include shooting incidents and threats. The suspects have been taken to the Serious Crime Suite at Antrim police station for questioning.”
