Police introduce additional neighbourhood beat officers

The teams, which cover the Antrim Line, Ballyclare, Macedon and University sectors, are responsible for delivering community policing and dealing with local issues.

As part of their move to make the teams more accessible to members of the public, the PSNI has produced contact details for officers in each of the four areas.

As well as publishing a list of contacts in this week's Times, the details will also be available on the PSNI website, through the District Policing Partnership and in libraries and other local public buildings.

Led by an Inspector and supported by a Sergeant, the Constables in each Neighbourhood Team now have responsibility for a specific beat area. Each officer has a mobile telephone number that members of the public can contact them on regarding non-emergency issues. This means that if the community has concerns, such as youths causing annoyance, they can contact their local beat officer, who will work with them and in partnership with other agencies such as the District Policing Partnership and Community Safety Partnership to try and resolve the issues.

PSNI Area Commander, Chief Inspector Paula Hilman explained: "Four Neighbourhood Policing Teams look after the Newtownabbey area. It is important that local residents know who these officers are and how to contact them. Visibility alone is not enough. Communities want accessible, knowledgeable and locally known officers.

"However, this works two ways. It is critical that local residents make an effort to engage with the Neighbourhood Policing Teams. We cannot effectively deal with the issues in your area if we are not aware of them. I would encourage people to make contact with my officers directly or through other channels such as Neighbourhood Watch schemes or local community groups."

District Policing Partnership Chairman, Fraser Agnew, welcomed the increase of officers within the local Neighbourhood Policing Teams.

"This is something the DPP has been keen to see happen for some time and the increase in officers is to be welcomed. It will take a little time for the teams to settle into their areas, but already we are seeing excellent work being done and some officers are already well known in the community," he commented.
