PLANS to turn a Portstewart Prom charity shop and menswear shop into a restaurant and take-away have been approved by Planners.

The application by NM Developments is for 20/21 the Promenade and plans to change the use of the buildings into a cafe with take-away facilities and a restaurant, while retaining the existing flats on the second and third floors.

One letter of objection was received from another food outlet but Planners said that the scheme was suitable for approval.

Speaking at Coleraine Council’s Planning Committee meeting on Tuesday, Cllr Christine Alexander said she was “confused” by the decision.

She said that last month the Committee had refused an application for another take-away on the Prom yet this plan was being given the go-ahead.

Planning officer Michael Wilson told the meeting that the difference was that, in this application, the take-away is ancillary to the primary use of the building which will be a restaurant.

Garvagh business

access gets go-ahead

A GARVAGH business has been given Planning permission to amend access arrangements despite eleven letters of objection to the scheme.

The application by Mr Martin Higgins was for Belraugh Road and proposed amending access arrangements to serve an existing business.

Planning officer Michael Wilson told Tuesday’s meeting of Coleraine Borough Council’s Planning Committee that amended plans had been received by the applicant which both they and Roads Service found satisfactory.

He added that all eleven letters of objection had come from the same objector therefore they recommended that the application be approved.

Agricultural shed turned down

PLANS to build an agricultural shed at Killeague Road in Coleraine have been refused by Planners.

The application from Mr E Watson was turned down as Planners said there was no overriding reason why the development was essential to the rural area.

They also refused the application because the agricultural was not deemed to be established, would create a ribbon development if allowed, would be detrimental to the rural character of the area and access arrangements were not deemed satisfactory.

Cllr William King asked members of Coleraine Council’s Planning Committee to support the applicant in the event of an appeal.

He described the application as a small building that has been used for some time and which is situated in a secluded area of trees.

“I had a difficult enough time even finding it so I find it hard to understand why the Planners should refuse this,” he said.

Portstewart plans refused

AN application to build two semi-detached houses on the site of one existing house on Portstewart’s Strand Road have been turned down by Planners.

The application by Trevor Wallace for 82 Strand Road received four letters of objection and Planners refused the scheme as, they said, it failed to provide a quality residential environment.

Speaking at Coleraine Council’s Planning Committee meeting on Tuesday evening, Cllr David McClarty requested an office meeting to discuss the matter further.

Wind turbine plan rejected

PLANS to build a wind turbine at Killeague Road in Coleraine have been refused by Planners as they were considered detrimental to nature conservation.

The application by Mr I McFaul for land 200 metres south east of 38 Killeague Road would also have affected telecommunications and was planned in the vicinity of badger sets and bat habitats.

Speaking at Tuesday’s meeting of Coleraine Council’s Planning Committee meeting, Cllr William King asked for an office meeting to discuss the matter further.

Portrush apartments

get approval

A scheme to demolish a building at Causeway View in Portrush and build three apartments in its place have been approved by Planners.

The application from Heather McKinstry for 8 Causeway View received one letter of objection regarding loss of privacy, light and a query over a chimney stack.

However, Planners said that amended plans had been received and no further objections had been received.

Sun room plans

given go ahead

A PORTSTEWART application to extend 3 Millhaven Park to provide a sun room has been approved despite two letters of objection.

The application by Mr and Mrs Allely received two letters of objection, however, Planner said that plans had been amended to move the sun room to the side of the dwelling.

Planning officer Michael Wilson told Coleraine Council’s Planning Committee that there was one outstanding objection to the scheme regarding a change of use of the building into a B&B or hostel.

This issue was outside of the Planners’ remit, said Mr Wilson.

Cllr Barney Fitzpatrick asked for an office meeting to discuss the matter further.

Pharmacy to change

into take-away

AN application to change a Coleraine pharmacy into a hot food take-away has been approved by Planners.

The application by Clear Partnership is for 46 Railway Road and received one letter of objection regarding right of way.

However, Planner said the scheme was suitable for approval.
