Created by sculptor Kevin Killen after consultation with residents of the east Antrim town, the life-size jaunting car pays tribute to figures such as Larne hotelier Henry McNeill, who brought tourists over from Scotland in the late 1800s.

The £80,000 project was commissioned by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and the Department for Communities as part of wider regeneration activity within Larne.

The Mayor, Councillor Peter Johnston, said: “I am delighted that the Jaunting Car sculpture is now complete and has been installed as a lasting tribute in Larne.

The sculpture recognises early pioneers of Larne's tourism industry.

“Created by the renowned sculptor, Kevin Killen, the piece marries art, heritage and the unique tourism offering we have in Mid and East Antrim Borough.

“It is a striking new landmark for visitors and locals to enjoy when the restrictions around non-essential travel permit, and a wonderful legacy to a local man who achieved so much personally and for his home town.”

The artwork has been installed at the junction of Pound Street and The Roddens, close to Larne Museum and Arts Centre and Larne Town Hall.

Councillor Gregg McKeen said: “As a council we are committed to investment in our town centres and tourism. This sculpture will be an excellent addition to Larne and a stunning piece of art for the local community to enjoy.”

He went to thank Andy King and all at Larne Renovation Generation (LRG) - a group of volunteers behind art and other improvement initiatives - for their efforts on this project and “for their ongoing commitment to Larne”.

Minister for Communities Deirdre Hargey said: “This piece of art, inspired by the local community, will add to the local heritage within Larne and the wider area. With brighter days ahead of us, I look forward to seeing the sculpture in person.”

Now that the sculpture has been installed, council is reminding the community of the ongoing coronavirus regulations for the protection of public health and is encouraging people to adhere to all guidelines for travel.
