Otter trap incident - house searched in Antrim

Officers from the PSNI’s Local Policing Team, along with the PSNI’s Wildlife Liaison Officer, carried out the search under the ‘Wildlife (NI) Order 1985 as amended’ on Tuesday (8 December).

The search follows the report of an otter being caught in a trap in the area on Sunday 6 October. Several items were seized and have been taken away for further examination while it has been arranged that a 65 year old man will be interviewed in connection with this seizure at a later date.

Chief Inspector John Allen said: “A wildlife crime involves any action against any protected wild animal or plant which contravenes current wildlife or animal welfare legislation protecting Northern Ireland’s wild animals and plants.

“Those who intentionally kill, injure or disturb protected wild animals need to be aware that you face the very real potential of being brought to justice. I would ask anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour, or suspects that a wildlife crime is taking place or has occurred, to contact their local police station on 101. In an emergency ring 999. The report will be fully investigated and where evidence of a criminal offence is found the offender will be reported to the Public Prosecution Service with a view to a prosecution.
