“This is wonderful news and I hope that as many people as possible will line the route of the Olympic Torch Relay when it arrives in Lisburn next June. The arrival of the torch along with the Chinese Olympic Team training at Salto will hopefully help Lisburn develop a stronger relationship with London 2012.”

He added: “As well as celebrating the wonderful occasion of the 2012 Olympics, and being part of this truly global phenomenon, the Torch Relay will give us, as a City, the opportunity to recognise the local torch bearers taking part.

“This honour will showcase people from all walks of life who have shown commitment, skill and dedication in their lives and whose stories have had such a positive effect on local communities. We look forward to hearing more about these people and the events planned to showcase the Olympic Torch Relay as the countdown to the 2012 London Olympic Games gets well and truly underway,” said Mr Beckett.
