NW students are recognised

THREE students from the North West have been recognised for their hard work during City & Guilds courses.

Ronan McGahon, Ann Murray and Alan Stone achieved Medals for Excellence at a prestigious ceremony hosted by Employment and Learning Minister Sir Reg Empey.

Self-employed Ronan, a 25-year-old from Limavady, was nominated for the determination he showed over the course of his apprenticeship and Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Services at Limavady College.

Ann, a 45 year-old support nurse from Londonderry, beat the competition to scoop her award for gaining her Level 3 NVQ in Health and Social Care. Meanwhile Alan, a 22 year-old from Londonderry, was nominated for the determination and drive he showed during his NVQ Level 2 in Retail Skills at the Derry Youth and Community Workshop.

City & Guilds, the UK ’s leading awarding body for work-related qualifications, has awarded the coveted Medals for Excellence every year since 1879. The programme rewards talented people who have displayed exceptional standards as students or educational professionals, and whose portfolio and achievements put them a cut above the rest.

Each of the individual medal winners are now in the running to win one of nine prestigious National Lion Awards, dubbed the ‘education Oscars’, which will be announced later this year at a gala event to celebrate learning, success and achievement, at The Lancaster, in London.
